Smart sensing: IO-Link, IIoT and Industry 4.0

Modern sensors deliver more than readings. They also provide diagnostic and condition data, forming the data basis for Industry 4.0. This section explains the key technologies that turn a simple sensor into a connected, smart device.

IO-Link explained simply

IO-Link is a standardised digital point-to-point link between sensor and controller, defined in IEC 61131-9. Over a conventional three-wire cable, IO-Link carries not just the reading but also parameters and diagnostic data. The practical benefit: sensors can be configured centrally, restored automatically during service, and report faults early. Browse the matching products under IO-Link.

Tip
IO-Link runs over the standard, unshielded 3-wire cable. No special cable and no address switch needed.

IIoT and condition monitoring

In the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), sensor data is captured, connected and analysed. Condition monitoring continuously tracks the state of machines, via vibration sensors, temperature and pressure, for example. Deviations from the normal state are spotted early, before they cause a failure. You will find suitable devices under IIoT Devices.

Predictive maintenance

Continuous condition data lets you predict when maintenance is due, instead of working to a rigid interval or waiting for a breakdown. Predictive maintenance cuts unplanned downtime and extends component life. It depends on a reliable sensor base that captures vibration, temperature and other parameters and makes them available for analysis.

Making sensor data visible

For data to be useful, it has to be analysed and visualised. Solutions for sensor evaluation, displays and visualisation and fieldbus modules connect the sensors to the higher-level control and IT layer. That is how readings become usable knowledge on the shop floor.
