Frequently asked questions about industrial sensors
Here you will find concise answers to the most common questions about selecting, wiring and using industrial sensors. For a tailored recommendation, use the AI advisor or a personal consultation.
Selection
Which sensor is suitable for detecting metal?
For contactless detection of metal, inductive sensors are the most rugged and common choice. They work without wear and respond quickly. See the inductive sensors.
How do I detect non-metallic objects such as plastic or liquid?
Capacitive or optical sensors are suitable here. Capacitive sensors detect almost any material and also work for level detection; optical sensors bridge longer distances. See capacitive sensors and optical sensors.
How do I find the right sensor when I'm unsure?
Describe your application to the AI advisor in your own words. It suggests suitable models from more than 31,000 products. The sensor selection guide offers a structured decision aid.
What do I need to consider when selecting a pressure sensor?
Four points are decisive: the pressure type (gauge, absolute or differential), the measuring range including the overload limit, the process connection (e.g. G1/4 or G1/2) and the media compatibility of the diaphragm and seals. Add the desired output: analogue (4–20 mA, 0–10 V) or IO-Link. Simply tell the AI advisor the range, connection and medium, and it will narrow down the suitable models directly.
How do I find a replacement or an alternative to an existing sensor?
Enter the article number or type designation; the AI advisor searches across manufacturers for technically suitable alternatives. You can also upload a photo of the nameplate if the designation is hard to read. This way you compare models from several manufacturers without going through datasheets manually.
How do I measure the level in a tank or silo?
It depends on the medium: for bulk goods such as grain, capacitive or contactless methods (ultrasonic, radar) are suitable; for liquids, hydrostatic pressure sensors are an additional option. If you need a continuous reading, choose a sensor with an analogue output rather than a pure level limit switch. See capacitive sensors or describe the application to the AI advisor.
Which sensors are suitable for predictive maintenance or condition monitoring?
Vibration sensors are typical, supplemented by temperature and speed monitoring. Devices with IO-Link continuously supply diagnostic data with which wear can be detected early.
Do I need a sensor with functional safety (SIL / PL)?
As soon as the sensor is part of a safety function, such as a safety door, speed or standstill monitoring, you need a safety-rated device with the appropriate classification (e.g. SIL2/SIL3 or PLd/PLe). If in doubt, personal consultation helps with the correct classification.
Technology & wiring
What do PNP and NPN mean on sensors?
PNP and NPN sensors differ in switching logic: PNP switches the load to plus, NPN to ground. The switching type has to match your controller input.
What is the advantage of IO-Link?
Over a conventional cable, IO-Link carries not just the reading but also parameters and diagnostic data. That makes commissioning, device replacement and maintenance considerably easier. More under IO-Link explained.
Which IP rating do I need?
It depends on the environment: IP67 for dust and temporary immersion, IP69K additionally for high-pressure washdown, such as in the food industry. Always check the rating against the real load.
Do I need an analogue output (4–20 mA / 0–10 V) or a switching output?
A switching output (PNP/NPN) delivers a yes/no signal: object present or threshold reached. An analogue output transmits the full reading, for example for distance, pressure or level. Anyone who also wants to transmit and parameterise values digitally will find IO-Link the most flexible option.
What does 'flush-mounted' and 'non-flush-mounted' mean for inductive sensors?
Flush-mountable sensors can be embedded flush in metal and have a shorter switching distance in return. Non-flush sensors offer a longer switching distance but need a metal-free clearance zone around the sensor head. The choice depends on the installation situation and the required range. See inductive sensors.
What is the difference between normally open (NO) and normally closed (NC)?
A normally open contact closes as soon as an object is detected; a normally closed contact opens in that case. Which variant you need depends on the signal logic of your controller and the desired behaviour in a fault condition.
Cable or connector (M8/M12): which connection type is more practical?
Connector variants (usually M8 or M12) make installation and device replacement easier and are the industrial standard. Hard-wired cables are often cheaper and practical in tight installations. Pay attention to the number of poles and the protection rating of the connector.
Which interface or fieldbus suits my controller?
At device level, IO-Link is the flexible standard. At the higher level, Modbus (TCP/RTU), PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, CANopen or EtherCAT come into consideration depending on the PLC. What matters is what the input of your controller supports.
What do I need to look out for at high ambient temperatures?
Always check the sensor's permissible operating temperature range against the real environment. For very high temperatures there are special types with an extended range; alternatively, thermal decoupling or distance from the heat source helps. The AI advisor finds the right type based on your temperature specification.
Consulting & AI advisor
Can I simply describe my application in my own words?
Yes. The AI advisor understands natural-language requests and combines semantic search with an AI agent. You do not need to click through a filter chain. A single sentence about the measurand, range and environment is enough to get started.
Can I upload a photo of the nameplate to identify a sensor?
Yes. Upload the photo and the AI advisor reads out the relevant data, identifies the sensor and suggests suitable alternatives if needed. For illegible nameplates, personal consultation provides additional support.
